Unpopular Opinion: Post-Game Snacks for Kids
Packaged Snacks and Kids' Recreational Activities
When it comes to fueling your child after recreational activities, it's important to consider the nutritional value and needs of your kiddo. Contrary to popular belief, kids don't necessarily need packaged snacks after such activities and they certainly don’t need a goodie bag FILLED with snacks. These snacks are certainly fun, but it feels like we are going overboard by providing a whole take-home bag of treats after our kids are simply playing an hour of baseball (or whatever!) Not to mention this puts a lot of pressure on moms to bring a boatload of snacks which can also be spendy!
From a sports nutrition perspective, children do not need highly processed, packaged snacks after recreational sports. What kids need is a regular meal or snack (depending on the time of the day) following the game. This could look like:
Yogurt and fruit
Cheese and crackers
A sandwich and chips
Nuggets and apple sauce
Versus. A bag of chips, a granola bar, a sports drink, AND a rice crispy treat.
I know that this opinion might not change the minds of any parents, and I will still provide snacks when it's my turn. However, I will keep them simple, such as a granola bar or an orange. This opinion is also not a judgment on other parents and what they like and want to provide as a post-game snack. This is just my opinion as a mom who is also a dietitian!
Lastly, it's important to note that sports drinks are completely unnecessary for kids and just provide too much added sugar. Water or a little diluted juice works great!
Before you load up the team on all the goodies, consider keeping it simple! I promise the kids will still be happy.
